Coach Wellbeing Initiative: Supporting Coaches’ Mental Wellbeing
Helping coaches and sporting organisations understand hidden pressures and create healthier coaching environments.

Helping coaches and sporting organisations understand hidden pressures and create healthier coaching environments.

The Coach Wellbeing Initiative was founded by Stuart Edwards after extensive research into stress factors, mental wellbeing for coaches, and effective support systems in coaching within the rugby union environment. This initiative draws on the experiences of coaches across grassroots, community, academy, professional, and international levels. Our goal is not to eliminate pressure or lower standards but to focus on creating healthier coaching environments where coaches can perform, lead, and develop without their mental wellbeing being treated as an afterthought.

Coaches are expected to lead, make difficult decisions, support others and perform under constant pressure. Yet the emotional, psychological and organisational demands of the role are often overlooked.
Coach wellbeing can influence communication, relationships, decision-making, retention and performance. Recognising these pressures is not about lowering standards. It is about creating environments in which coaches can lead and perform sustainably.

The Invisible Load explores the pressures coaches carry beyond the touchline.
Drawing on extensive research and conversations with coaches from grassroots, community, academy, professional and international rugby, the book examines the emotional, psychological and organisational demands that often remain unseen.
It considers the difficult decisions, expectations, relationships and responsibilities that coaches manage while continuing to lead, support others and perform under pressure.
This is not a book about removing challenge or lowering standards. It is about recognising the person behind the coach and encouraging healthier, more sustainable coaching environments where wellbeing and performance can exist together.
Available from 7 August 2026.

Ben sits down with Stuart Edwards, coach & wellbeing researcher, to explore a question rugby has avoided for long: “If we want sustainable performance, shouldn’t we also be building sustainable coaches?” Stu discusses unseen coaching pressures, from isolation and emotional spillover to job insecurity and scrutiny. Drawing on 18+ years in policing and rugby research, he explains why stress accumulates quietly, why peer support matters and why sustainable performance requires sustainable coaches.
We welcome conversations with coaches, clubs, universities, governing bodies, and sporting organizations interested in creating healthier coaching environments that promote mental wellbeing for coaches and enhance support systems in coaching.
